Daddy cool

As we approach Father’s Day, on Sunday 15th June, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the men in our lives. As a Mum, the most vital relationship in my life (aside from my daughter, of course) is the connection with my husband, her lovely Dad. He’s a good Dad too.

Let’s celebrate all the Dads, Grandpas, Papas, Father-in-laws and Father figures guiding the way. Showing up, not only full of fun but attentive too. Not afraid to show their love and affection to their kids. To be a stable provider while also being a gentle hand to hold.

Like the new baby Daddy, taking shifts to gladly stand, rocking their newborn hour after hour if it means a peaceful sleep for mummy.

Or the Teenager’s Taxi Dad who will, without hesitation (although maybe with a bit of moan), drive anywhere at any time of night to pick up their child and bring them safely home.

Or the fountain-of-knowledge Dad; a walking, talking, directory enquiries help-desk of a man, who will show you how to wire a plug, change your oil and still have time to debate politics and the footie - this was my much loved and missed Father-in-law, Bry.

In a world full of predatory men, toxic masculinity and inequality, let’s look for the goodies; the trustworthy men who stand up for gender equality, peaceful resolution and kindness.

Who push the baby buggy with both hands, who put their phone away and pay attention, who make dinner and do the washing not just because she’s asked but because they know it needs doing.

As a woman in my forties and mum to a wonderful, funny, creative and free-spirited daughter, I will fight the patriarchy until my dying day but I do so with the men I love hopefully standing by my side in that fight.

I can’t stand the word ‘Macho’ and I dislike its definition immensely: ‘masculine in an overly assertive or aggressive way.’ No one wants to meet that guy.

Well, I can’t think of anything more ‘positively’ masculine than being there for your family - your team - and providing your time, energy and love. None of us get it right all the time. It’s impossible. But trying our best is certainly good enough. And that’s what the men in my life do everyday so I want to say thank you.
